What are Health Disparities?
Health disparities are gaps in the quality of services and the delivery of such services that often affect racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. With national effort growing in promoting healthcare equality, it is critical that we recognize such disparities still exist and understand the steps that must be taken to provide quality care and service to all.
Who Are APB's Speakers on Health Disparities?
APB's roster of speakers on health disparities will inform an audience on all aspects of this national concern -- from causes and effects to how we can work towards eliminating them on all fronts. These speakers, ranging from minority health experts to former US Surgeon Generals, draw on their extensive backgrounds in medicine, public health, education, and advocacy to promote minority health and help ensure fair, affordable, and effective treatment and services for all individuals and communities.

Alvin Poussaint
Psychiatrist / Media Consultant / AuthorA veteran of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Poussaint is a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School who is renowned as an expert and educated crusader for African Americans and other ethnic minorities victimized by continuing disparities in healtchare. Exploring the history of segreation in the healthcare system, he discusses how racism began in American medicine, how it is still evident today, and what needs to be done to remedy this growing concern.

David Satcher
Director, Satcher Health Leadership InstituteThe 16th US Surgeon General, Dr. Satcher is Director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute, whose mission is to influence policies toward the reduction and ultimate elimination of disparities in health. The Institute’s programs reflect Dr. Satcher’s experience in improving public health policy and his commitment to eliminating health disparities for underserved groups, such as minorities and the poor, and shedding light on such neglected issues as mental and sexual health.

M. Joycelyn Elders

Her strong commitment to bettering healthcare access, improving education, and increasing equality has put her at the forefront of today’s critical health concerns.
