Mental Health & Substance Abuse
What are the Challenges for People Living with Mental Illness and Substance Abuse?
Of the many challenges facing the mental health and recovery communities, one of the most difficult is trying to remove the stigma surrounding mental illness and substance abuse. Sometimes evident as early as a person’s teenage years, such issues often go unnoticed by friends and family until it is too late. Additionally, the fear of being judged and feeling the shame often associated with mental illness and/or substance abuse prevents many people from ever seeking the professional help they need.
Due to lacking adequate insurance coverage, or simply being unaware of the resources available to them within their community, many people with mental health and substance abuse issues are left untreated. It is important to understand how vital our mental health is and the positive steps we can take in helping those battling mental illness and/or substance abuse.
