Nader Speaks Out Against Corporations' Expanding Political Influence

Consumer advocate, keynote speaker and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader, in response to the recent Supreme Court decision that now allows corporations to spend unlimited amounts of money on political campaigns, has spoken out against the increasing corporate influence over national politics.

Nader's latest article in The Wall Street Journal, co-written with Robert Weismann, outlines his opinion on the dangers of providing corporations with this much power in the political arena. He argues that corporate contributions now vastly outweigh individual political donations, and as a result it will limit the ability of politicians to block any lobbying effort that favors the corporate agenda. He adds that this Supreme Court decision will further damage America's political integrity because,

funneled without limit through trade associations and shadowy front groups able to run vicious attack ads without identifying their corporate patrons, such lucre will deter good candidates from running for office because they won't want to have anything to do with such dirty politics.

Declaring that corporations are "not humans" and thus lack the constitutional right to influence public policy or popular opinion, Nader states that it is necessary to alter this decision and once again make corporations public servants rather than public leaders.
