Bryant Gumbel

Bryant Gumbel joined CBS News in 1997, having previously worked for NBC for nearly 25 years, serving as anchor of The Today Show for an unprecedented tenure of 15 years. He also anchored that network's 1992 presidential election coverage and hosted primetime coverage of the 1988 Olympic Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea. He was also a contributing anchor for Dateline, NBC News' primetime magazine.

Most recently, Gumbel anchored Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel, a CBS News magazine, which received two Peabody Awards, an Overseas Press Club Award, and an American Women in Radio and Television Award. Gumbel is also the host of HBO's critically acclaimed Emmy-winning program, Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel. Since its inception, Real Sports has been honored with 19 Sports Emmy Awards as well as the 2006 duPont-Columbia University Award for broadcast journalism.

Gumbel has compiled a remarkably diverse array of credits. Having anchored and reported from all corners of the globe, he has interviewed everyone from superpower leaders to Super Bowl heroes, and has covered foreign wars, elections, international summits, and presidential inaugurations. Gumbel covered the outbreak of the Persian Gulf War from Saudi Arabia, the reopening of the arms negotiations from Geneva, and the 10th anniversary of the fall of Saigon from Ho Chi Minh City.

The four-time Emmy Award-winning Gumbel is the recipient of an Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club, an Edward Weintal Prize from Georgetown University for diplomatic reporting, and a George Foster Peabody Award for his work in Vietnam. In addition, he was awarded the Frederick D. Patterson Award, the Martin Luther King Award from the Congress of Racial Equality, three NAACP Image Awards, and received the United Negro College Fund’s highest honor. For orchestrating and anchoring the Africa broadcasts, Gumbel was honored with the International Journalism Award from TransAfrica, the Africa’s Future Award from the US Committee for UNICEF and the leadership award from the African-American Institute.

Prior to his tenure with NBC News, Gumbel worked for NBC Sports. During that period, he served as the host of virtually all of its primary programs and championship-event broadcasts, including Major League Baseball, the National Football League and the NCAA basketball tournament and hosted NBC’s coverage of the PGA Tour in 1990.
