Harlem Gospel Choir
The world famous Harlem Gospel Choir was founded in 1986 by Allen Bailey. Allen, who is known for his work with Michael Jackson, The Commodores and Prince, got the idea for the Choir while attending a celebration in honor of the first national Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at the renowned Cotton Club in Harlem.
The Choir is first and foremost a ministry and works with children's charities around the world whenever possible, incorporating the joy of faith into all of its performances. The Choir also hopes to bring about a better understanding of African American culture as it relates to the black church and the inspirational music called Gospel.
The Choir has a core of 14 highly talented and motivated singers and musicians, hand picked from the black churches in Harlem. The theme of every performance is "bringing people and nations together and giving something back." The Choir had the honor of performing before his Holiness, Pope John Paul III in Central Park and again at the Vatican in 2003, as well as for Nelson Mandela at Yankee Stadium. The Choir has performed with Sir Paul McCartney, the Chieftains and Miss Diana Ross. The Choir, christened "Angels in Harlem" by U2, is fondly known as "God's people from Harlem" by its many fans around the world.
The Choir maintains a busy touring schedule and performs in diverse markets and venues including performing arts theatres, colleges and outdoor festivals.
