John Dorfman

John Dorfman founded Thunderstorm Capital in 1999, The Lobster Fund in 2000, and Dorfman Value Fund in 2008. Thunderstorm Capital is a money management firm in Boston which serves more than 100 high net worth investors through a private partnership, a mutual fund, and individually managed accounts.

Before founding Thunderstorm, Dorfman worked for Dreman Value Management in 1997 through March 2002. He was a Senior Vice President from September 1997 through 2000, and a Managing Director in 2001-2002.

Dorfman has also been a financial journalist since 1970. His stock-market column can be seen on Bloomberg news terminals and at Bloomberg.com. It has also appeared in newspapers including the Los Angeles Times, International Herald Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Rocky Mountain News and Palm Beach Post.

In his eleven years at The Wall Street Journal, Dorfman wrote articles for the “Money and Investing” section, including “Heard on the Street” columns. He introduced features that systematically analyzed Wall Street research. Among these were the annual All-Star Analysts Survey, and quarterly rankings of the performance of brokerage-house recommended lists and asset-allocation blends. Dorfman was also the writer who launched the Investment Dartboard contest, and the insider-trading feature called “Inside Track.”

Dorfman was a writer for Forbes in 1982-1984 and Executive Editor of Consumer Reports in 1984-1986. He has written nine books, including Family Investment Guide and The Stock Market Directory. He appears frequently on radio and television, including Nightly Business Report, CNBC and Bloomberg television.
