Justin Halpern
After being dumped by his longtime girlfriend, then-28-year-old comedy writer Justin Halpern found himself living at home with his 73-year-old father. Looking for direction and a little TLC, Justin quickly realized that his father, never one to mince words, was going to offer guidance in the only way that he knew how – with no-holds-barred, expletive-ridden words of wisdom. And so, Justin started writing his father's advice down:
"The worst thing you can be is a liar... Okay fine, yes, the worst thing you can be is a Nazi, but THEN, number two is liar. Nazi 1, Liar 2."
"Pick your furniture like you pick a wife: It should make you feel comfortable and look nice, but not so nice that if someone walks past it they want to steal it."
These quotes became @shitmydadsays, a Twitter sensation that boasts 1.4 million followers and has spawned a best-selling book and sitcom starring William Shatner.
Sh*t My Dad Says (HarperCollins), the New York Times Bestseller, is a memoir of an often-hilarious and always-loving relationship between father and son. Full of universal truths that other parents may have sugar-coated, this collection of essays, coupled with Halpern's dad's aphorisms, follows the pair from Little League through post-college poverty – offering advice we can all benefit from and a story that is as heartwarming as it is entertaining.
$#*! My Dad Says (CBS), the television series, stars William Shatner as "Ed," a retired military doctor whose cranky one-liners have left him with three ex-wives, a strained relationship with his two sons, and a lot of time alone in his garden. Ed's younger son "Henry" finds himself out of work and unable to pay his rent, so he takes up his dad's offer to move home, agreeing to follow house rules. But "Ed" has a secret plan – a second chance to be the father he never was – if it doesn't kill them both first. The series, also starring Nicole Sullivan and Will Sasso, is being produced by Warner Bros.; Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker co-exec produce the show along with Max Mutchnick and David Kohan who serve as exec-producers.
Halpern, now 29, has appeared on Last Call with Carson Daly, Countdown with Keith Olbermann, and Chelsea Lately. He's been interviewed by several international publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Times of London. He is currently co-writing and co-executive producing $#*! My Dad Says for Warner Bros and CBS.
