Keith Campbell
Dr. Keith Campbell is a cell biologist and embryologist with 30 years of scientific experience, 25 of which have been in the field of cell growth and differentiation. He obtained a BSc in Microbiology from Queen Elizabeth College, University of London, in 1978 and a D.Phil. from the University of Sussex in 1986. Following two postdoctoral positions, he joined the Roslin Institute in 1991 to study the production of mammalian embryos by nuclear transfer. This research led to a number of groundbreaking achievements, namely the production of the first mammals to be "cloned" from cultured differentiated cells; the production of "DOLLY," the first mammal to be cloned from an adult-derived somatic cell; and, in collaboration with PPL Therapeutics, the production of the first transgenic mammal by nuclear transfer.
In July 1997, he became Head of Embryology at PPL-Therapeutics. While at PPL, the first gene-targeted lambs (Cupid and Diana) were born along with the world's first piglets cloned from somatic cells. In November 1999, Dr. Campbell became Professor of Animal Development at the University of Nottingham, where he continues to research the basic mechanisms underlying development and differentiation. Dr. Campbell serves on a number of editorial boards including Cloning and Stem Cells and Reproduction, and he is a member of several scientific advisory boards within the academic sector (such as Gene Center in Munich and Genome Center in Brazil) and the industrial sector (such as Advanced Cell Technologies in the US and Cellcentric in the UK).
He has written a book titled The Second Creation: Dolly and the Age of Biological Control.
