Lois Schiffer
Lois Schiffer is a partner at Baach Robinson & Lewis in Washington, DC, where she focuses on environmental law, including counseling, litigation, planning, and mediation. From 1993 to 2001, Schiffer was the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Environment and Natural Resources Division at the U.S. Department of Justice, with 400 lawyers and responsibility for litigation on behalf of all federal agencies related to pollution, natural resources, wildlife, certain Indian issues, and land condemnation. She also worked on international environmental issues and legislation related to the environment. She established an active alternative dispute resolution program and an ethics program in the Division. She has, for over 15 years, been an adjunct professor of environmental law at Georgetown University Law Center. She has extensive knowledge of many aspects of environmental and natural resources law.
Schiffer's previous work includes: Senior Vice President for Public Policy at the National Audubon Society, where projects included oceans and world population; General Counsel at National Public Radio; Staff attorney at theWomen's Rights Project of the Center for Law and Social Policy, and previous stints in private practice and at the Department of Justice. She was a law clerk on the District of Columbia Circuit.
Schiffer has authored many articles on environmental law topics. She is the recipient of the Charles Fahy Distinguished Adjunct Professor Award, and of the Edmund J. Randolph Award for outstanding service at the Department of Justice.
Schiffer serves on the Boards of the Keystone Center and the International Senior Lawyers Project. She is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, and a member of the American Law Institute. She has served on the Boards of a number of non-profit organizations, including the District of Columbia Bar, American Rivers, and the ACLU of the National Capital Area.
Schiffer has a lifetime goal of hiking in all of our nation's National Parks, and has made considerable progress toward that goal.
Schiffer graduated from Radcliffe College in 1966, and Harvard Law School in 1969.
