Yo Soy Boricua

After trying to respond every time somebody made an ignorant remark about Puerto Rico and her people, Rosie Perez decided it was time to educate the world about the rich and important history of her homeland. This led to the creation of the documentary Yo Soy Boricua, Pa' Que Tu Lo Sepas! (I'm Boricua, Just So You Know!)

Featuring Perez (who is director and executive producer), her family and friends, Yo Soy Boricua, is both broad history lesson and personal tale. In fact, a lot of it feels like a home movie about a little girl who grew up beyond poor in Bushwick but learned self-respect from the aunt who never let her forget where she came from. Featuring historical footage and interviews with leading Puerto Rican leaders, educators and artists, Perez has captured the intricate, often conflicted, but enduring relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico.
