Topics
The Art of the Ask: Negotiating with Confidence
Women negotiate all day every day, often without even realizing they are in a bargaining situation. Whether the negotiation is a small, everyday matter, or a bigger, more structured deal, making the most of these conversations is imperative. In this session, you will:
- Identify what your negotiation tendencies are
- Learn to flex your style based on the topic or person with whom you are negotiating
- Prepare for a negotiation from both informational and emotional perspectives
- Maneuver through negotiation using verbal and non-verbal communication, making concessions, managing tradeoffs, and closing the deal
Leadership Lessons from the C-Suite
This session shares the hardest-won leadership lessons of top women executives including Marie Chandoha, CEO of Charles Schwab Investment Management; Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea Company; Fizzah Jafri, COO at Morgan Stanley; Rosemary Turner, President at UPS; and Irene Chang Britt, Chief Strategy Officer at Campbell's Soup—among many others. What best practices do successful women employ and what pitfalls do they actively avoid? Learn how leading women have mastered:
- Navigating organizational culture and politics
- Ensuring they're heard the first time
- Building alliances and getting others vested in their success
- Managing resistance and pushback and honing their executive presence
Political Savvy: Navigating the Corporate Chessboard
What are office politics and why do they have any bearing on one's leadership abilities? Politics are the often unspoken, unshared rules of how things get done in an organization. Learn how to navigate the political terrain with ease by:
- Recognizing the organizational culture, hierarchy, and "shadow hierarchy"
- Identifying culture guides and boosting relational capital along the way
- Building alliances and networks as a way to stay informed and aware
- Deciding whether to fit in—or differentiate—within the corporate culture, based on the issue at hand
Leading with Influence (When You Don't Have Authority)
In today's world, it's not enough to be good at your job. Women who secure seats at the top echelons of business use specific techniques for building influence. Beyond delivering exceptional results, they behave, communicate, and utilize their power strategically to garner respect. Discover the essentials of:
- Determining the kinds of influence that exist and using them to build credibility
- Exploring ways to find your unique leadership voice and making the right impression from the start
- Rallying for a change initiative that drives policy or the corporate direction
- Learning how to engage others in your cause and empower people to take action
Take Risks & Prosper
Have you declined an interesting assignment, job, or project because of the risk involved? Risk is inherent to being a leader and, what's more, we will always be competing against other risk takers in the work world. Learn how to hone your own instincts and to make good decisions with partial information, including:
- Assembling an advisory "go-to" council as you undertake risks
- Deciding which risks are worth pursuing
- Combining "gut" instincts with grounded data and facts to make decisions
- Managing the success or failure of a risk
Creating a Leadership Brand
How you speak, physically carry yourself, and convey what you know are just a few of the assets that make you unique and memorable to people you meet. The labels people attach to you become part of your personal brand and self packaging. Hear ways to market yourself in order to leave a positive impression on the people you meet by:
- Drawing on the core tactics of persuasive communication in meetings, presentations, and off-the-cuff interactions
- Checking your modesty at the door and learning the delicate art of self promotion by taking credit for achievements
- Finding creative ways to "up" your level of visibility in the organization, regardless of your role or function
The Sponsorship Effect: Why Mentoring Isn't Enough
A consistent group of trusted advisors and advocates—your "Personal Board of Directors"—is a key asset shared by many successful women leaders. In this workshop, learn the compelling differences between sponsors and mentors and see how to build your own network with the right mix of counselors, experts, devil's advocates, and cheerleaders.
- Hear the latest research for gaining a sponsor, including why those women with sponsors enjoy a 30% higher "success" rate than those without them
- Understand the role of sponsorship and how it differs for men and women
- Learn how to invite internal and external participants into your circle and make effective use of their time and involvement
