Shelby Steele

Shelby Steele is currently a senior research fellow at The Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He has a BA in political science, an MA in sociology and a Ph.D. in English. For many years, he was a professor of English at San Jose State University. His newest book, "A Dream Deferred: The Second Betrayal of Black Freedom in America," was published in October 1998.

Steele received the 1990 National Book Critic's Circle Award, General Nonfiction, for his book, "The Content of Our Character: A New Vision of Race in America." He has also received an Emmy Award for television documentary writing, "Seven Days in Bensonhurst" (1991), National Magazine Award (1989), Best American Essays (1989 and 1993), Best American Essays, Honorable Mention (1991), President's Scholar Award from San Jose State University (1991), and an Honorary Doctorate from Tiffin University.

Steele's work has appeared in "Harper's" magazine, "The American Scholar," "The New Republic," "The Wall Street Journal," "The New York Times," "Newsweek," "Time," "The Washington Post," "Dissent," "Commentary," the "Wilson Quarterly," and many other publications.
