Joe Daniels

Former President & CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum

Biography

“When Joe Daniels was hired, Ground Zero was a hole in the ground and the memorial and museum were plans on the drawing board. Thanks in no small measure to Joe’s outstanding leadership, we now have a magnificent tribute to all those who lost their lives and gave their service on 9/11.”

—Michael Bloomberg

Combining a moving account of one of the most tragic events in modern history with an inspiring narrative of leadership, teambuilding and bringing diverse stakeholders together despite their differences, Joe Daniels relives the events of 9/11 and brings a CEO’s perspective to the creation of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Through iconic photos, video, and tales of epic heroism and overwhelming loss, Joe’s presentations honor the 2,983 people, from 92 different nations and all walks of life who were lost, but never forgotten. He also shares the less-told stories of the weeks, months and years that followed at Ground Zero and beyond. This includes his own “battlefield commission” from Mayor Bloomberg to lead the creation of what would become one of the most visited museum venues in the world. Read More >

Touched forever by the moment when he arrived at the World Trade Center train stop on September 11, 2001 shortly after the first plane hit, Joe Daniels would go on to dedicate more than a decade of his life to the creation and operation of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. An attorney by training, he joined the organization as General Counsel in 2005. The following year, he was named President and CEO by its Chairman, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. As CEO, Daniels directed operations, planning, construction and fundraising, presiding over the opening of the Memorial in 2011 and the Museum in 2014. During Daniels’ 10 years of leadership, the institution grew from a staff of 40 and an annual budget of $12 million to about 400 in-house and contracted personnel and an $80 million budget. When he left the organization at the end of 2016, nearly 30 million people from around the world had visited the 9/11 Memorial and more than seven million had visited the Museum.

Now working in the private sector, Daniels remains passionate about the events of 9/11 and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s mission. Celebrating the power of hope, love and bringing people together, Joe Daniels reminds us of what we must never forget about 9/11 and the great things that all of us can achieve when we stand up and stand as one.
