Biography

Dr. Nettrice Gaskins is a digital artist, educator, and cultural critic whose work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, creativity, and equity. Using generative AI, neural style transfer, text-to-image tools, and other emerging technologies, she creates art that challenges conventional ideas about who shapes innovation and whose stories are represented in the digital world. Her work draws on Afrofuturism and “techno-vernacular creativity,” a framework she developed to explore how culture, history, and lived experience influence artistic and technological expression.

Dr. Gaskins is the assistant director of the Lesley STEAM Learning Lab at Lesley University, where she connects science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics with culturally responsive learning. She has taught creative AI, robotics, computer science, multimedia, and visual art, encouraging learners to see technology as something they can question, shape, and use in their own ways. A 2021 Ford Global Fellow, she is also recognized for examining bias in education and emerging technology.

Her AI-assisted artwork has appeared in museums, galleries, publications, and digital spaces. The Smithsonian commissioned her Featured Futurists portrait series for its FUTURES exhibition, and her work has also been featured in the SFO Museum exhibition Women of Afrofuturism.

Dr. Gaskins earned a BFA in Computer Graphics with Honors from Pratt Institute, an MFA in Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a doctorate in Digital Media from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Her first full-length book, Techno-Vernacular Creativity and Innovation, was published by The MIT Press. The book presents a culturally relevant approach to STEAM education that recognizes the creative and technical contributions of historically marginalized communities.

On stage, Dr. Gaskins brings an artist’s imagination and a researcher’s perspective to conversations about generative AI, algorithmic bias, education, and the future of creativity. She helps audiences think more critically about how culture and human intention shape the technologies we build.
