Biography

Tony Horwitz is the national and New York Times best-selling author of Confederates in the Attic: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War; Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Hook Has Gone Before, about the Pacific voyages of Captain James Hook; Baghdad without a Map and Other Misadventures in Arabia, about the Middle East; and A Voyage Long and Strange, about the centuries-long European discovery of the new world. His latest book, Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid That Sparked the Civil War, was named a New York Times Notable Book of 2011 and one of the year’s ten best books by Library Journal and won the 2012 William Henry Seward Award for Excellence in Civil War Biography. Horwitz is a native of Washington, DC, and a graduate of Brown University and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. He worked for many years as a newspaper reporter, first in Indiana and then overseas in Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East mainly covering wars and conflicts as a foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal. After returning to the US, he won the Pulitzer Prize for national reporting and wrote for The New Yorker before becoming a full-time author.

Tony Horwitz has also been a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University and a visiting scholar at the John Carter Brown Library at Brown University. He is married to author and speaker Geraldine Brooks. Read Less ^
