Dr. Stella Safo’s Octavia’s Cure Centers Patients, Caregivers, and Communities

Healthcare works better when patients, caregivers, clinicians, and communities are not operating in separate lanes. That idea is at the heart of Dr. Stella A. Safo’s work and the mission behind Octavia’s Cure.
A board-certified practicing HIV primary care physician, public health practitioner, and founder of Just Equity for Health, Safo has dedicated her career to improving how healthcare systems listen, respond, and deliver care. Through Octavia’s Cure, she is helping create space for voices too often left out of conversations about what healthcare should become.
The initiative brings together people who know healthcare from different vantage points: patients navigating systems, clinicians delivering care, organizers creating community solutions, designers building new models, and community members whose experiences are often overlooked. The goal is not simply to name what is broken, but to imagine what becomes possible when people across healthcare work together.
That approach reflects one of Safo’s central messages: improving health outcomes requires more than treating patients. It requires listening to them, understanding their lived experiences, and designing systems around the realities of the people those systems are meant to serve.
For healthcare audiences, Safo brings a perspective that is both practical and deeply human. Her presentations examine health equity, care model design, patient trust, public health, advocacy, and the conditions that shape whether people can access care with dignity and confidence.
As healthcare leaders continue to confront issues of trust, access, communication, and systems change, Safo’s work offers a clear reminder: better healthcare starts when patients, caregivers, clinicians, and communities are part of the same conversation.
