Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Named Among Forbes Africa’s 15 Icons
20 Oct 2026
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Nobel Peace Laureate and Africa’s first democratically elected female head of state, has been named among Forbes Africa’s 15 Icons in celebration of the publication’s 15th anniversary. In its new cover story, “The Icons,” Forbes Africa recognizes individuals whose contributions across public service, business, culture, and sports have helped shape the continent’s past, present, and future.
The recognition emphasizes lasting impact rather than wealth or fame alone. Presented in no particular order, the selection celebrates influence that extends beyond individual achievement to create broader economic, social, and cultural change. Sirleaf is featured alongside figures including World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, author Abdulrazak Gurnah, actor Lupita Nyong’o, and comedian Trevor Noah.
Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on Leadership, Democracy, and Women’s Empowerment
Sirleaf’s career offers a powerful example of leadership through extraordinary challenges. During two terms as Liberia’s president, she guided the country through postwar recovery, helped rebuild its economy and institutions, and led its response to the Ebola crisis. Her presidency concluded in 2018 with Liberia’s first peaceful, democratic transfer of power in 73 years. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011 for her work advancing women’s rights and participation in peacebuilding.
As a speaker, Sirleaf draws on these experiences to explore democratic leadership, women’s empowerment, economic development, and decision-making during crisis. For colleges and universities, her perspective connects discussions of history, politics, and public service with the responsibilities facing emerging leaders. Her presentations invite audiences to consider how courage, accountability, and a commitment to others can shape meaningful change.
