Director of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory and Duke Robotics
Mary “Missy” Cummings is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Duke University, and is currently the director of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory and Duke Robotics. Cummings received her B.S. in Mathematics from the United States Naval Academy in 1988, her M.S. in Space Systems Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1994 and her Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia in 2004.
She is an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Fellow and the co-chair for the World Economic Forum’s Council on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. Her research interests include human supervisory control, explainable artificial intelligence, human-autonomous system collaboration, human-robot interaction, human-systems engineering, and the ethical and social impact of technology.
