Dr. Ruth Westheimer may best be known for having pioneered talking explicitly about sex on radio and television, but as it turns out, that is only a small part of her rich and diversified life. Born in Germany in 1928, Dr. Westheimer was sent to Switzerland at the age of ten to escape the Holocaust, which wiped out her entire immediate family. At the age of seventeen she went to then Palestine. She joined the Haganah, the Israeli freedom fighters, was trained to be a sniper and was seriously wounded in a bomb blast. She later moved to Paris to study at the Sorbonne and in 1956 went to the U.S. where she obtained her Masters Degree (M.A.) in Sociology from the Graduate Faculty of the New School of Social Research and Doctorate of Education (Ed.D.) in the Interdisciplinary Study of the Family from Columbia University Teacher's College. “Thank you all so much for a wonderful evening. Your kindness through all of the changes that had to be made was incredible. We had approximately 600 people watching on over 300 screens and you lifted everyone’s spirits and gave us something to talk about! On behalf of our team, thank you so much.”
"She won over our crowd. She absolutely just touched our hearts. She had a special quality that you have to know when listening to her is just a gift from God. The way she interacted with our audience was nearly translucent. It’s almost as if she heard them and made them instantly feel at peace with whatever they had questions about. Please send our deepest thank you and our thankfulness for being who she is because she is one who’s mold for sure must have been broken. ❤️ The event was so endearing…seeing and feeling Dr. Ruth’s youthful and positive energy was so contagious for all of us. Even for my 17 year old daughter who was in attendance. That’s all she kept talking about last night to the family! Our Senior population needs more of these events, because the smile on their faces and laughter’s in the room were definitely noticeable, especially during these unpredictable times!"
“The event was wonderful and I really enjoyed spending extra time with her when she arrived early. She is amazing!!”
"Many of the participants shared how moved they were by her remarks, her resiliency and her great sense of humor. There were folks who took her up on the suggestion that they donate to the Federation, and there was even talk of a book group after we distribute the books."
"The Gala was amazing!! 240 people. There are no words for Dr. Ruth! What a lady (all 3 ft of her). Funny, charming, insightful and puts the energizer bunny to shame. The night was a major home run from start to finish and at the end of the day a very successful fundraiser."
"The event was amazing! Dr. Ruth is a real character. Her energy and charisma is amazing. We had a nice turnout and a great event."
