Biography

Scott Blanchard is Principal and Executive Vice President of Client Solutions for The Ken Blanchard Companies®, the company cofounded by his father, best-selling business author Ken Blanchard. An accomplished author in his own right (coauthor of Leverage Your Best, Ditch the Rest and Leading at a Higher Level), Scott represents the next generation of pioneering thought leadership on management issues. He is the coauthor of Blanchard’s newest training program, The First-time Manager which teaches the essential skills that every new manager must master in order to succeed in the workplace.

The experience and innate business instincts Scott has developed help enrich his messages on coaching and leadership, and he turns that knowledge into plans for action, leaving audiences inspired and ready to achieve. Scott’s high-energy presentations get to the core of today’s business issues by exploring different facets of the corporate environment and culture. Having led major training interventions at numerous Fortune 500 companies, Scott has worked with a wide variety of senior executives in leading large initiatives for international corporations. An experienced trainer and organizational consultant, he has extensive experience in all of the Blanchard® key practice areas, most notably corporate coaching, having co-created the coaching function within the company. Blanchard Coaching Services has revolutionized the corporate coaching industry and has provided coaching to more than 10,000 clients throughout the world.

Scott was educated at Cornell University and received his master’s degree in organizational development from American University in Washington, DC.

Moving the Needle on Employee Engagement

in actual engagement levels. The number of engaged workers, as defined by Gallup, has stubbornly remained below 33 percent of the American working population. Worldwide, the statistic is 13 percent. In short, organizations have discovered that measuring engagement is a lot easier than improving it. In 2006, Ken Blanchard Companies began our own research into employee work passion. The purpose of the research was to identify the specific factors and leadership behaviors that could successfully increase engagement levels. We first looked at attributes someone would exhibit if they were engaged (Perform at a Higher Level, Put in Extra Effort as Needed, Act as a Good Corporate Citizen, Stay with the Organization Longer and Recommend the Organization to Others). Then Ken Blanchard Companies’ created a 15-question, 6-point scale focused on these five attributes and asked 12,000 people how they would score themselves. This gave them a way to measure what they would call employee work passion and provided some baseline data they could use as a benchmark. It has turned out to be a remarkably simple, reliable and validated measure.
