Former President of Liberia and Nobel Laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Joins The Elders

Liberia’s former president, Nobel Peace Laureate and APB speaker President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has joined The Elders, a group of former world leaders tasked with ensuring peace and human rights. Sirleaf, Africa’s first democratically-elected female head of state, is a leading promoter of freedom, justice, women’s empowerment and democratic rule.
Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders, welcomed President Sirleaf with an opening statement. In her acceptance speech, President Sirleaf commented, “The Elders’ work to promote justice, equality and human rights are needed more than ever...I look forward to working with them to inspire people everywhere, particularly women and girls, to reach for their true potential, break through barriers and pursue their dreams.”
