Are Full Body Scans Worth the Cost? Shark Tank’s Daymond John Weighs in.

It’s a question that’s being asked increasingly often as patients are becoming more proactive with their healthcare. Are full medical body scans (MRIs) worth the steep, out-of-pocket cost to help possibly detect diseases earlier? (The prices can run into thousands of dollars and are not covered by insurance.) And for medical professionals, will these scans revolutionize the future of healthcare? For many celebrities, including APB speaker Daymond John, the answer is a definitive yes.
In a recent story on ABC‘s Nightline, John, star of ABC’s Shark Tank and founder of global lifestyle brand FUBU, was interviewed about his experiences with scans. The father of three has overcome thyroid cancer and is incredibly conscious about his health. In addition to regular cancer checkups, John gets a full body scan once a year and is a fan.
John added, though, that the scans can be a double-edged sword. Two years ago, the scan came back with the finding of a possible aneurysm in his leg, which alarmed him. It turned out to be benign.
In the future, John will continue to get scans each year and said it is well worth the investment. “I don't know if cancers are anywhere else in my body,” he told Nightline. “This is a second level or a second layer of what I think is insurance to me.”
In addition to his businesses and Shark Tank, John is also an author of six bestselling books, including The Power of Broke (2016) and Rise and Grind (2018). In 2020, John released his fifth book, Powershift, which walks through his tried-and-true process of how to transform any situation, close any deal and achieve any outcome. John's most recent book, Little Daymond Learns to Earn (2023), is his first for kids and reached the New York Times and Amazon bestseller lists in the first week of its release. The book addresses the current void of educating our children about money in a fun and engaging story for parents and kids to connect. John’s mission is to continue challenging the status quo and leave a lasting legacy of inspiring other leaders to do the same.
